The Accessibility Standards Training online training course will provide general requirements in the areas of customer service, information and communication, employment, transportation, and built environment regarding disabilities. and aims to identify, remove, and prevent barriers for people with disabilities.  This course was designed to help you learn about Accessibility Standards.

Many provinces have taken significant steps towards building a more accessible province and have passed legislation, more specifically:

  • In Ontario: Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The Act was first introduced in 2005 with the goal to make the province accessible for people with disabilities by 2025.
  • In Manitoba: Accessibility for Manitobans Act. The goal is to make the province more inclusive for everyone by 2023.
  • In British Columbia: Accessibility 2024. The mandate is to create a plan to make the province more accessible for people with disabilities by 2024.
  • In Nova Scotia: Accessibility Act for Nova Scotians.  Bill 59 is now law since September 2017 with the goal to make the province accessible by 2030. 

These provinces have established Accessibility Standards, which will require employers to develop, implement and enforce accessibility standards for people with disabilities.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Recognize some of the barriers people with disabilities can face and how to assist;
